Is it possible to get 100 degrees boiling water from a tap?

We all know that the boiling point of water is 100°C and at this point it becomes steam.  However, we are often asked is it possible to have 100°C boiling water from a tap? It wouldn’t be much of a cuppa if all we had was a tea bag and a cup of steam so our Billi taps leave our factory set at 98.5 degrees C which is the optimum temperature for brewing a cup of tea.

The Billi hot tap is designed so that there is no temperature decline in periods of high demand so that everyone receives a consistent temperature throughout the working day.  The temperature can be adjusted to meet customer’s requirements.

A Billi system with a drainage font is far safer than using a kettle.  This is because a kettle usually contains over a 1L of boiling water and if this is tipped onto the users hand whilst filling a cup or knocked over onto someone, the damage could be very serious.  When using a Billi tap, the cup can be placed onto the drip tray and the users hand can be kept well out the way whilst the mug is filled with hot water.  Kettles and wall mounted hot water boilers are a concern for safety in the office environment and a Billi tap or counter top Arizona hot water boiler are much safer options.

Splash free technology by electronic control of boiling water delivery ensures user safety. The flow is momentarily slowed as the water exits the dispenser, eliminating splashing as the water enters the cup. All Billi Boiling and Chilled dispensers come with an integrated safety switch. The red lock icon demonstrates when the safety switch is activated, simply press the switch to release the lock and allow full use of boiling water. The system will revert to safety mode after 8 seconds of non-use.

Billi Tap
Billi Taps

Where space is an issue, you can have a 4 in 1 Billi water tap which has filtered chilled water, hot drinking water, sparkling drinking water and a separate mixing tap for the sink unit.  The system is known as the Billi Quadra Plus and available to lease or purchase outright.  The Billi Quadra range is a great tap that has instant, filtered boiling and chilled water with a range of capacities to suit every office environment. We supply Billi taps to offices in Manchester to London, each with a package tailored to suit their requirements.

Although there are Billi systems capable of producing enough hot water for 100 staff, if this is the sole source of boiling water for your office, we recommend having two smaller boiling chilled water taps installed.  This makes it quicker to fill cups in peak times and also means you have a backup if one system was to break down.  If your Billi tap does break down, please call our service department who will be able to give you advice over the phone and arrange a Billi engineer if necessary.

The versatility of a Billi Tap

It’s not only the boiling aspect to consider when you consider how a Billi Tap could save you money. They are practical and versatile, offering instant boiling, chilled and sparkling water, removing the need to spend money on other appliances like water coolers, since a Billi Tap does the job of a water dispenser and a kettle, which also frees up more space and creating a less cluttered office environment.

Billi Tap water dispense options & combinations

We stock every single dispense option available in the Billi Tap range, so depending on your budget and workplace requirements, here at Wellbeing Group we have Billi system that will be a perfect addition to any office. Don’t forgot our stunning range of colours and finishes also.

Is Sparkling Water Good or Bad For You?

Firstly, what is sparkling water? The scientific name for sparkling water is carbonated water. Carbonated water is water into which carbon dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved, either by technology or by a natural geologic source.

Carbonated water is a refreshing beverage and a good alternative to sugary soft drinks. Concerns have been raised that it may be bad for your health but if you look at the nutritional values, there is no fat, no sugar and no carbohydrates.

So why could sparkling water be bad for you?

There was a myth that drinking carbonated water is likely to erode your teeth and bone calcium but there is no evidence that it has any effect on your calcium levels.

Carbonated water does contain a very small amount of acid which can erode your tooth enamel (tooth enamel is the hard, outer surface of your teeth).  However, the acids in non-sugary drinks are so weak the damage to your teeth is minimal.  One study found that sparkling mineral water damaged enamel only slightly more than still water. Furthermore, mineral water was 100 times less damaging than a sugary soft drink.

Carbonated sugary drinks can lead to severe dental decay but plain sparkling water appears to pose very little threat to dental health.

The Top 4 Benefits of Drinking Sparkling Water

1. Sparkling Water Keeps You Hydrated – there was myth that drinking carbonated water will dehydrate you but studies have proved that it has the same compounds as plain water.

2. Feel Full For Longer – the carbon dioxide in sparkling water allows fizzy bubbles to fill your stomach and trick your brain into feeling full, which means you will probably eat less.

3. It May Help Relieve Constipation – studies have shown that the average bowel movement increases with those who drink sparkling water compared to those who drank tap water.

4. Increase Your Productivity – our brains don’t work well if we don’t drink water.  Sparkling water is extremely refreshing and easy to drink, if we have sparkling water on tap in your office you can constantly replenish the water that your body is using.

Sparkling water is available to buy in bottles at most supermarkets, however, you could consider installing a floor standing or counter top sparkling water dispenser in your office to save using plastic and also a more cost effective solution.

International Coffee Day – Women in Coffee

International Coffee Day – Women in Coffee

International Coffee Day – Women in Coffee

Many countries around the world celebrate their own National Coffee Days at various times throughout the year. In Brazil, the biggest coffee producer, it is celebrated on 24th May. In the USA it’s 29th September. Here at Wellbeing Group, we believe every day is a good day for celebrating our favourite hot beverage. However, to try and unify all these celebrations across the globe, the member countries of the International Coffee Organization and their coffee associations chose 1st October as International Coffee Day! This year we have decided to dedicate the ocasion to celebrate all the women in coffee – Women play a vital important role in the coffee chain from planting the seeds to trading and sourcing to brewing. Have you ever thought about how much work goes in for you to be able to drink your daily cuppa?

Over the past fifty years, coffee shop fever has swept the UK. Once a nation of tea lovers, the UK now spends £6.2 billion a year in shops and drinks an estimated 95 million cups of coffee in just one day. There are a staggering 16,500 coffee bars in Britain, and in spite of the current financial climate, coffee shops are one sector that continues to boom while other businesses struggle. Once viewed as an expensive luxury, coffee shops are now seen as an affordable treat. Appealing to both men and women, families, individuals, and everyone from students to business people and pensioners – coffee shops are truly universal in their appeal. The boom in coffee shops in part was brought about by more working women having money to spend, creating a demand for an affordable yet luxury-style coffee.

Gender equality in the coffee industry

Despite being a driving force behind the demand for coffee shops in the UK, women are massively under-represented in the coffee industry. Despite a “data gap” regarding gender equality in the coffee chain, what data there is shows that there is a lot of room for growth for equality in the industry.

For our design and fit out and facilities management customers, we have also provided a clear breakdown of each coffee machine’s energy performance capabilities, dimensions and the requirements for installation, power and water supply. And of course a breakdown of purchase and lease pricing, for which we offer flexible payments plans. If there is still anything you happen to be unsure about you can still speak to our experts in a our service team to help you figure out the best coffee machine for your workplace.

Women In Coffee

Field work for women in the coffee industry

A 2008 analysis by the International Trade Centre shows that women are highly present in fieldwork, harvesting, in the sorting of coffee beans, and other manual work. A more recent study in 2016 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) showed that even though women made up 43% of the agricultural labour force in developing countries, this all came from basic field work. Women undertaking this work receive lower wages and fewer entitlements than their male co-workers doing the same work. To date, women have been barely present in trading, exporting, analysis or lab work. Decision-making and business roles are reserved for men, while women are employed in dead-end labourer roles.

Women & coffee plantation ownership

The 2008 study also indicated another disadvantage; far fewer women-owned coffee plantations. While they make up a majority of the labour workers, approximately only 15% of coffee plantations are owned by women. The reason for this can be explained in an even more shocking study on gender equality in the coffee industry in 2015. This study revealed that in many countries where coffee is grown, the laws either completely prevent or limit the amount of land a woman can own, preventing them from ever owning coffee plantations.

Working conditions for women in the coffee industry

The same study also found that, even though they receive lower wages, women on average worked 15-hour shifts, while their male coworkers worked an average of 8-hour shifts. Women also have reduced access to resources such as healthcare and education compared to men.

Nick Watson, the coffee-sector adviser with the International Trade Centre says, “Social norms often discriminate against women in rural areas leading to disproportionate land and asset ownership; household and income decision making; time and labour distribution; access to information and training; and participation and leadership in rural organisations or as registered suppliers to agribusinesses.”

Further research has also shown that women, and even child workers, are often the victims of assault. One study has shown that 25% of labourers on a coffee plantation have experienced some kind of assault while working there. The under-representation of women in management means there is little or no support or protection of female plantation workers or their rights. Women who are victims of these crimes reportedly stay silent due to fear of reprisal.

Women in coffee in Europe and the US

Gender equality isn’t just limited to the coffee plantations and traders in these countries. We may have laws in place that better protect women’s rights, but there is still a gender gap even in coffee shops in Europe and the US.

Looking at the division of labour, once again while there are equal opportunities for women to become a barista, women are under-represented in management. Similar to the coffee plantations, female baristas are paid less, have reduced job stability, and are at high risk of harassment, discrimination, and more.

Even female barista themselves are under-represented at events such as barista championships. In the 18 years the World Barista Championship has been running it’s never been won by a female, and the same pattern is seen in coffee roasting championships.

The outlook for women in the coffee industry

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) it will be another 100 years before men and women achieve social equality, and over 200 years before men and women achieve total financial equality. It’s a long way away, but it is being facilitated by a number of women’s organisations working to try and improve equality in the coffee industry across the globe.

By enforcing gender inequality, many coffee farmers are actually closing themselves off to a variety of benefits. Currently, it’s estimated that eliminating the resources gap between men and women and allowing women equal access to agricultural resources would increase the yields on women’s farms by 20% to 30% and increase agricultural production in developing countries by up to 4%.

The International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) works in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) and the International Trade Centre to help build a network of female coffee workers throughout East Africa, in order to overcome challenges such as lack of land ownership, financial resources, and access to education and healthcare.

Growing Women In Coffee is another project empowering women in the coffee industry, part of which included the launch of a brand of coffee entirely grown and produced by women. When Growing Women in Coffee was first established, they asked the female workers what it was they felt they needed. They found that women were often left to collect wood for the kitchen that produces meals for the workers. By investing in a biogas cooker, the women were quickly freed up to spend more time collecting beans, increasing the yield of the farm. This is just one of many positive changes they’ve invested in by listening to the female workforce.

The success of these projects do not rely on women solely however, many organisations emphasise the importance of educating both men and women, especially where patriarchal traditions are still in place. They want to get men onside and understanding the importance of including and valuing women in their workforce, especially at a decision making and financial level.

Meanwhile, organisations like Barista Connect focus on inspiring and empowering women in the coffee industry. They run networking events where women within the coffee industry can share their success stories, educating and inspiring women in various roles throughout the industry. The movement #coffeetoo was designed to counter the threat of harassment and assault in the industry across the world.

In Summary

While there are organisations working to improve the opportunities and basic rights of women within the coffee industry, there is a lot of room for growth. It’s essential that those in the coffee industry work together, uniting across the coffee chain in order to tackle the issues regarding inequality. From the plantations to the coffee shops, and from individual businesses to large coffee traders, everyone has a responsibility to ensure that women are no longer treated as anything more than a primary labour force, and are offered the same opportunities as their male counterparts. As the research proved, this will not only benefit the female workers but the coffee industry as a whole.

Tips For Staying Hydrated At Work

Why is it important to stay hydrated at work?

Keeping hydrated is vital in order for us to optimise our health and performance in everyday life and that extends to our working day. It can be so easy during a busy day to forget or not prioritise taking on fluids during regular intervals.

Taking those little moments, although you feel you may not have time at some points in your day, are definitley worth it. Studies show that dehydration will affect concentration levels, mood, clarity of thought and a huge increase in fatigue.

Hydration is crucial for your health, but it’s also crucial for success at work too. Dehydration impacts your concentration, reaction times and mood, which combined will massively impact your work. Feeling groggy, tired and irritable from dehydration will not only slow down your pace but will prevent successful team collaborations.

Here at Wellbeing Group, the home of workplace refreshment, we have put together some top tips for staying well hydrated whilst working from home. Keep yourself healthy and focussed throughout your working day, helping you perform to the best of your ability.

What are the signs that you are dehydrated?

The following symptoms signal that you could be dehydrated:

  • Feeling sleepy or fatigued
  • Feeling thirsty or hungry
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Dark yellow or amber coloured urine
  • Struggling to focus
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling restless or irritable

Tips on staying hydrated at work:

1) Avoid processed food

Fast food and other processed foods such as microwave meals contain excessive salt, sugar and fat compared to fresh food. Consuming excessive quantities of salt, sugar and oil speeds up the process of dehydration, so avoid fast food and opt for fresh foods instead.

2) Electrolytes

Electrolytes regulate the flow of water in and out of cells and regulate nerve impulses. We lose these essential salts in our sweat, and they are crucial to staying hydrated. If you are doing a lot of physical work consider taking electrolyte supplements to stay hydrated. Coconut water is a good natural alternative to sports drinks as a source of electrolytes.

3) Choose the right snacks

Pick a selection of fruits and vegetables high in electrolytes or with a high water content to see you through your working day. Bananas, raisins, avocados, spinach, sweet potato, coconut, beans and lentils are all high in electrolytes. Foods such as apples, pineapples, strawberries, blueberries, melon, cucumbers and celery all have a very high water content and make very hydrating snacks to keep you hydrated throughout the day.

4) Pick the right water

Avoid flavoured water with added sugars and flavourings. Sugar and other additives have a dehydrating effect on the body. If you really can’t stand the taste of water try adding flavour with a fruit infuser bottle, which gives you the option of adding natural organic flavours of your choice to your drink!

5) Drink water regularly

One glass in the morning or at lunch won’t be enough to keep you hydrated. You should take in 2- 3 litres of water a day, so keep a bottle or glass of water with you all the time and prompt yourself to keep drinking especially on hot days. Alternatively, why not try our water coolers, which provide fresh drinking water on demand.

6) Wear light or loose clothing

Avoid wearing thick, dark or tight fitting clothing that does not allow your skin to breathe and cause you to sweat more. Instead, opt for lighter and looser clothing that will allow your body to keep cool and prevent dehydration from overheating or sweating.

7) Try soups and stews for lunch

Soups and stews have a much higher water content than “dry” lunches. As well as keeping you hydrated, it is easy to make a large batch of your favourite soup or stew at the beginning of the week, and then you have your work lunches prepared for the rest of the week, saving you time!

8) Avoid alcohol

Everyone likes to let their hair down after work, but try keeping alcohol to a minimum as it can cause dehydration. The effects of this can still be felt the day after, leaving you feeling tired and groggy.

9) Keep cool

Switching on or raising the air conditioning can really help with staying hydrated at work. But why is that? Fresh or cool air will help your body maintain a healthy temperature and prevent you from overheating. It will also  reduce the loss of water through sweating. Want more tips on keeping cool?

10) Don’t wait until you’re thirsty

Thirst is actually a sign that you are already dehydrated. Keep drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day and eat fruits and vegetables with high water content to avoid becoming thirsty in the first place.

11) Hydrate yourself after exercise

If you’re hitting the gym before work, try weighing yourself before you start your workout and immediately afterwards. For every pound you’ve lost, drink an additional 500 ml of water to replace the body fluids you lost during the workout.

12) Quit Smoking, vaping and nicotine gum

Nicotine – as well as various other chemicals found in cigarettes and e-cigarettes – causes dehydration and affects your body’s ability to regulate hydration. As well as numerous other benefits to your overall health, giving up these habits will also help you stay hydrated!

13) Drink ice cold water

Help keep your core body temperature down by drinking chilled water. If your office doesn’t have a water dispenser that provides chilled water, why not recommend our Nebraska Elite Direct Chill Desktop to your employer?

14) Check Your Urine

One of the quickest and simplest indicators of how hydrated your body is your urine. If you are hydrated your urine should be fairly clear, colourless and odourless like water. The darker your urine the more dehydrated you are. If it’s dark yellow or amber in colour then replenish your water levels and guzzle down some H2O!
